Mulch is one of the cheapest, highest-impact upgrades for any yard. A 2–3 inch layer holds moisture so you water less, blocks light so weeds can’t take hold, and insulates roots against Manitoba’s freeze-thaw cycles. As it slowly breaks down, it feeds the soil too.

What does mulch actually do for a garden bed?
A 2–3″ layer holds soil moisture so you water less, smothers most weeds before they start, insulates roots through Winnipeg’s temperature swings, and finishes the bed so plants read as intentional. It works around shrub beds, tree rings, foundation plantings, perennial borders and informal paths.
Natural or coloured mulch — which should I choose?
Natural wood mulch is the best value and greys out to a soft, woodsy tone. Coloured mulch — red, brown or black — holds its colour far longer and is the choice when you want the bed to frame the house: black against light stucco, brown as a safe all-rounder, red with warm brick.
How thick should mulch be, and how often do I top it up?
Lay 2–3″ — thinner lets weeds through, thicker can starve roots of air and hold too much water. Most Winnipeg beds want a top-up every one to two years as the bottom layer breaks down into the soil. Keep mulch pulled back an inch or two from stems and trunks so bark does not stay wet.
