Driveway Pavers vs Patio Pavers Winnipeg: Which Products Are Rated for Vehicle Load

Driveway and patio pavers often look identical, but only some are rated to carry a vehicle. Learn how thickness, aspect ratio and the manufacturer’s rating decide which Barkman and Belgard pavers suit a Winnipeg driveway.

Driveway pavers and patio pavers often look identical from above. The same product line is frequently offered in more than one thickness with the same face pattern, which is exactly why this gets confused at the ordering stage.

What separates them is depth. A thicker paver distributes vehicle load across a larger cross-section and resists the cracking and rocking that tire loads produce, particularly in the turning movements that happen every day at the top of a driveway.

The Rating Is the Thickness

Belgard’s published guidance is that driveway pavers should be at least 60 mm thick to support vehicle weight without cracking or shifting, and that 80 mm is the thickness engineered for driveways and moderate vehicular traffic in both residential and commercial settings. Barkman’s 80 mm products are described the same way: commercial grade, engineered for vehicle-rated applications including driveways and parking areas.

Canadian precast concrete pavers are manufactured to CSA A231.2, which is worth knowing as the standard your product should reference regardless of brand.

Thickness Typical Rating Suitable For
30 mm (1 3/8″) Pedestrian and overlay only Resurfacing over existing concrete, light pedestrian areas. Never vehicle traffic.
60 mm (2 3/8″) Pedestrian standard; some lines rated residential vehicular Patios, walkways; residential driveways only where the manufacturer rates that specific line for it
80 mm (3 1/8″) Vehicular and commercial Residential driveways, parking areas, light commercial vehicle traffic
100 mm (3 15/16″) Heavy commercial Industrial and heavy-load applications

Why 60 mm Is a Conditional Answer

The 60 mm tier is where most of the confusion lives, because the honest answer is “it depends on the line.”

Belgard states that driveway pavers should typically be at least 60 mm, and several specific 60 mm lines are rated for residential vehicular applications. Dimensions™ 6 in 60 mm is one Belgard identifies that way. At the same time, plenty of 60 mm products are designed as pedestrian pavers and are not rated for vehicles at all.

So 60 mm is not a rating on its own. It’s a thickness that some product lines carry a vehicular rating at and others don’t. The only reliable way to know is to check the manufacturer’s rating for the specific product, which is a question the yard can answer when you’re ordering.

Thickness also isn’t the only variable. Belgard’s commercial specification pairs it with an aspect ratio limit, which is the ratio of a unit’s length to its thickness. For residential driveway use at 60 mm the maximum is 4:1, and for heavy vehicular applications at 80 mm it tightens to 3:1. A long, thin unit flexes and rocks under a turning tire in a way a more compact unit doesn’t, regardless of how thick it is, which means a large-format 60 mm paver and a small 60 mm paver are not equivalent for a driveway even when the thickness matches.

Where there’s any doubt, 80 mm in a compact format removes the question entirely.

Product Lines Rated for Vehicle Load

Both manufacturers Ditchfield Supplies carries publish vehicular-rated lines. A few examples of how the ratings are stated:

Barkman

  • Cobble™ 80 mm: Barkman’s product specification table carries explicit Pedestrian, Road/Vehicular and Permeable designations, and the 80 mm Cobble sizes are marked for all three. Open spacer joint design, four sizes to a pallet.
  • Boardwalk 80 mm: an eight-paver system at 80 mm, described by Barkman as suited to high-traffic areas including driveways, patios and plazas, with wide spacers allowing permeable installation. All eight sizes come mixed on the pallet.

Belgard

  • Dimensions™: Belgard rates Dimensions™ 6 in 60 mm and Dimensions™ 12 in 80 mm for residential vehicular applications.
  • Mega-Lafitt®: a consistent 80 mm height with a cut-flagstone texture, described by Belgard as suitable for driveway and other vehicular applications.
  • Classic Standard: available in both 60 mm and 80 mm, manufactured to CSA A231.2.

These are examples of how each manufacturer states its ratings, not a stock list. Both catalogues are considerably larger than this and availability changes through the season. Worth knowing too: a rating can vary between sizes within the same product line. Where a line offers a range of unit lengths at the same thickness, the longest units are the ones to check specifically, since that is where the aspect ratio runs highest. Don’t assume a line-level rating covers every size in the pallet. Before ordering anything for a driveway, confirm two things with the yard at 204-889-6268: that the line is currently in stock in the thickness you need, and that the manufacturer rates that specific product for vehicular use. Neither can be assumed from a product name or a photograph.

Permeable Options

Permeable pavers are available in driveway-rated thicknesses as well. Belgard states that all its permeable pavers at 80 mm can be used for residential and commercial vehicular applications, and that many of its 60 mm permeable pavers are approved for residential driveways. Barkman’s Boardwalk 80 mm carries wider spacers for permeable installation.

Worth knowing: a permeable driveway has a different base system than a conventional one, since the whole point is moving water down through the structure rather than shedding it off the surface. That’s a design question to settle before selecting the product.

Patio Pavers and Slabs

For a patio, the thickness question relaxes considerably, which opens up the range of products available.

  • 60 mm is the general-purpose patio and walkway standard
  • Large-format slabs are a patio product category of their own, and the thickness that works for a patio slab is not a driveway rating
  • 30 mm overlay products exist specifically for resurfacing sound existing concrete, which is a patio and walkway application only

For large-format slab selection, including the Barkman and Belgard flagstone-style lines and the thickness considerations for Winnipeg’s freeze-thaw, see our flagstone guide.

The Paver Is Half the Answer

A driveway-rated paver on an inadequate base will still fail. Vehicle load has to be carried by the structure underneath, and a driveway base is deeper and more demanding than a patio base.

Base and bedding material selection is covered in detail elsewhere rather than repeated here. See our crushed limestone vs clear stone guide for which aggregate compacts into a load-bearing base, and our screenings and stone dust guide for the bedding course and the full layered system.

Edge restraint is the other item that differs. A driveway needs restraint rated for vehicle loads, because tires turning across the perimeter apply lateral force that a patio-grade edge isn’t designed to resist.

Working Out Quantities

Pavers are sold by coverage area, and the coverage per pallet differs between product lines and thicknesses. An 80 mm paver covers less area per pallet than the same face dimensions at 60 mm, since you’re buying more concrete per unit. Bring your square footage to the yard once you’ve chosen a line, and account for a cutting allowance on any layout with angles or curves. The material calculator handles base aggregate volume.

Installation

Ditchfield Supplies supplies the materials; installation is a contractor service. For driveway and patio installation in Winnipeg, including base preparation to the depth vehicle loads require, Lawn ‘N’ Order installs paver surfaces across the city.

FAQ: Driveway and Patio Pavers in Winnipeg

Can I use 60 mm pavers for my driveway to save money?

Only if the manufacturer rates that specific line for residential vehicular use. Some 60 mm lines carry that rating and some don’t, and the face pattern tells you nothing about it. Check the rating for the exact product rather than the thickness alone. If the line isn’t rated for vehicles, the saving disappears the first time a paver cracks under a turning tire.

Does a heavier vehicle need thicker pavers?

Thickness ratings generally distinguish residential vehicular from commercial and heavy-load applications. A standard residential driveway serving passenger vehicles and light trucks is what the 80 mm residential rating addresses. Regular heavy vehicle traffic, a delivery route, or equipment storage is a different load case and should be specified accordingly.

Can patio pavers be used for a walkway?

Yes. Walkways are a pedestrian application, so standard patio-thickness pavers are appropriate. The exception is a walkway that vehicles cross, such as a path running over a driveway apron, where the crossing section carries vehicle load and should be specified for it.
