Material calculator

Landscape material calculator

Estimate the cubic yards required for a rectangular project area.

Estimated material 2.2 yd3

What does yd³ mean? yd³ means cubic yard. It measures volume, not length or surface area.

This is an estimate. Compaction, settlement, waste and irregular shapes can change the amount required. Confirm your order with the yard.

How to use it

Measure the area, then choose a practical depth.

  1. Measure the length and width of each rectangular area in feet.
  2. Enter the planned material depth in inches.
  3. Add separate areas together and allow for compaction, settlement and waste.
Confirm the quantity

Planning guide

Common starting depths

These ranges are general planning references. The gravel depth below is for a prepared pathway surface; patio construction requires a deeper engineered base and is outside this guide.

2–3 in

Mulch refresh

A common surface layer for established garden beds.

4–6 in

New lawn / Four-Way Mix

A general starting range for establishing a new lawn area.

2–3 in

Decorative stone

A typical finish layer over a prepared landscape bed.

3–4 in

Gravel pathway

A general surface depth after the required base has been prepared.

Calculator FAQ

Understanding cubic yards.

What does yd³ mean?

yd³ means cubic yard. One cubic yard is a volume measuring 3 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet high, or 27 cubic feet.

Why are bulk landscape materials sold by the cubic yard?

Soil, mulch and aggregate fill three-dimensional space, so volume is more useful than square footage alone. Length, width and depth are combined to estimate the cubic yards required.

Should I order exactly the calculator result?

Treat the result as a planning estimate. Compaction, settlement, waste, uneven ground and project specifications can change the final quantity. Confirm the amount with the yard before ordering.
