What is riverstone used for?

It is also a real drainage tool — dry creek beds, downspout splash areas and French drain fill all move water instead of holding it.
Riverstone or coloured granite — which suits my house?
Smooth, rounded riverstone reads natural and soft and pairs with brick, stucco and traditional homes. Crushed coloured granite — including black granite — is angular and bold, and looks sharp against modern grey and dark-trim builds. Grab a sample and hold it against your siding before committing to a full yard.
How deep should decorative stone be, and do I need fabric?
Spread stone 2–3″ deep over woven landscape fabric and hold the edge with steel or aluminum edging so it does not migrate into the lawn. One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3″ — use the material calculator for your beds. Skip plastic sheeting; it traps water and tears apart in a season or two.
Is stone better than mulch around a foundation?
For the first 12–18″ against a foundation, stone is the safer pick — it will not hold moisture against the wall or break down into soil that traps water, and it does not need replacing every couple of years. Keep the grade sloping away from the house and stone becomes a drainage detail, not just a look.
